Age Awareness Week 2008

Age Awareness Week poster

Age Awareness Week will be launched on Monday 29 September in the Long Gallery, Stormont, Belfast.  Research on rights and older people commissioned by the Changing Ageing Partnership (CAP) will be released at the launch.

This year the theme for the week is Rights with a particular focus on Human Rights and Equality.  A number of events organised by CAP and older people are planned across Northern Ireland which will highlight the issue of discrimination against older people specifically in relation to the provision of goods, facilities and services.  In addition the stereotypical view of older people as a homogenous group will be challenged and their diversity celebrated. The aim of the week is to raise awareness on the right to equality and non-discrimination and on the problem of multiple discrimination faced by many older people.

Launched by the Changing Ageing Partnership in 2006, this is Northern Ireland’s third Age Awareness Week. The Changing Ageing Partnership (CAP) brings together Age Concern Northern Ireland, Help the Aged in Northern Ireland, Queen’s University Belfast and the Workers’ Educational Association and is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies.  CAP’s goal is to empower older people to transform how they are viewed by sections within our society and its vision is of a strong, informed voice capable of challenging attitudes and approaches to ageing.
