Recession costs NI 33,000 Jobs
Figures published in a recent survey carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), have estimated that the recession has now cost Northern Ireland around 33,000 jobs.
The majority of these losses have come in the construction industry where around 10,000 jobs have been lost. The manufacturing industry (9,000 losses), along with the services (7,000) and retail & hospitality (7,000) industries, have also been hard hit.
PwC's Regional Trends Survey found that almost a quarter of all new jobs created between 1998 and 2008 (around 122,000) had been lost over the past two years as a result of the economic downturn and accompanying financial instability.
However, PwC also highlighted that its figures did not include job losses amongst the self-employed, a group very likely to have been badly affected by the recession.
