Greater Protection for Caravan Owners

Citizens Advice welcomes the passing of the Caravans Bill at the Northern Ireland Assembly this week.  The Bill which is likely to take effect in the Autumn gives protection to those who live in a caravan as their main residence and to those who holiday in static caravans.

The legislation places a requriement on the owners of caravan sites to provide both residential and holiday caravan occupiers with written statements on the particulars of their agreement within a specified time limit.  The Bill also updates the meaning of a caravan in line with the current definition in England and Wales.

The Caravans Bill should help many caravan owners to be more aware of their rights in relation to their caravan and any changes which are made on the site.  It is hoped that the introduction of this legislation will end the situation whereby many caravan owners have been forced to accept changes made by the site owner without any protection.
