Question

Who does not have to take a driving theory test?

Answer

A person who is taking a practical test will not have to take a theory test if s/he:- wants to upgrade her/his licence in the same category, for example;

  • is upgrading her/his car licence to be able to drive a car towing a large trailer.
  • has a licence to drive automatic cars and/or motorcycles and wants to upgrade her/his licence to a manual gearbox for the same type of vehicle.
  • has a full driving licence for an invalid carriage.
  • holds full entitlement to drive certain motor vehicles, for example, motor tricycles, because s/he has a full motorcycle licence issued before 1 February 2001, passed a theory test and then passed a practical moped test and now wants to upgrade to a motorcycle licence.
