Volunteer Advisor

Q. What sort of experience do I need to become an adviser?

A. There is no need to have specific experience to be an adviser with CAB Strabane. Our volunteers come from all walks of life - some with previous experience and some without. All new volunteers receive full training before becoming an adviser, and have an on-going training programme once qualified.

Q. Do I need qualifications?

A. No. All that you need to know will be taught to you during a comprehensive training programme. We want people who are good communicators and who have the capacity and willingness to learn.

Q. How much time do I need to give?

A. You must be able to give a minimum of 6 hrs per week. At the moment our Bureau operates during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9- 5) so we ask that you be available in those hours. If you can meet this minimum, we will try and be as flexible as possible about days and times you work.

Q. Will I get a qualification at the end of my training?

A. Yes; upon successful completion of the Northern Ireland Open College Network level 3 accredited advisor training programme. Our training is highly respected by many other agencies, and if you are looking for paid work in the advice/community work fields, the experience you will gain from working with us will be extremely helpful.

Q. Do the Bureau pay my travel expenses?

A. We ask people to try to use the most economical form of transport. We will pay your bus fares and 40p per mile if you travel by car.

Maximum payment of £10/day unless attending training or specific duties which require travel.

Admin and Reception

We are always looking for people with general office and reception skills to help us with our office admin.

This could include answering the telephone, passing on messages, booking appointments and assisting with information collection, storage and analysis. Other tasks would be ensuring that our reception area has everything it needs, and is tidy and welcoming for our clients.

We would assist you with our in-house induction training to ensure that you understand the CAB service and our aims and principles.

Volunteer News

Recognition for the effective involvement of volunteers!

Strabane & District CAB has recently achieved the Investing in Volunteers Quality Standard, recognising the excellent work they do with volunteers. The Bureau Manager, Meraid Griffin said, "The award demonstrates how much we value our volunteers and provides official recognition of this fact. " Investing in Volunteers is the UK quality standard for all organisations involving volunteers.   Investing in Volunteers aims to improve the quality of the volunteering experience for all volunteers and demonstrates that organisations value the enormous contribution made by their volunteers.

Investing in Volunteers is delivered by the four national volunteering infrastructure bodies, Volunteering England, Volunteer Development Scotland, Volunteer Development Agency in Northern Ireland and Wales Council for Voluntary Action.

Strabane & District CAB was assessed against a range of best practice standards and proved to excel in all aspects of working with its volunteers.

Sandra Adair, Investing In Volunteers Manager for Northern Ireland said,  “The Volunteer Development Agency is delighted to announce Strabane CAB's successful achievement of this award, they have demonstrated a real commitment to volunteering, proving that their volunteer management policies and procedures meet nationally recognised standards.”

Investing in Volunteers is unique in that it is the only standard that focuses on volunteers.  It is based on four areas of volunteer management; planning for volunteer involvement, recruiting volunteers, selecting and matching volunteers and supporting and retaining volunteers.

It is the only quality standard that has independent external validation with a UK Quality Assurance Panel that makes recommendations to the UK Volunteering Forum, the awarding body.

Please note: To ensure the safety of our clients, the Citizens Advice service requires that all volunteers who have access to children and vulnerable adults have an Access NI check completed.

The Citizens Advice Bureau is committed to the promotion and delivery of equal opportunities to volunteers and so has a policy to ensure ex-offenders are not discriminated against.

All offenses, other than sexual crimes against a child or vulnerable adult, will be treated on an individual basis taking into account issues such as the risk to the client, the circumstances of the offense (e.g. what it was, is it relevant to the volunteer role, how long ago it was) and the reputation of the bureau.
